Violence in Mexico and Canadian Civil Society Responses

Wednesday, 08 March, 2017
17:00-20:30

Join us at York University for an exciting event organized by the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean and co-sponsored by Amnesty International.

Renowned Mexican scholar and human rights activist Sergio Aguayo will speak about the crisis in Mexico, amidst the targeted assassination of journalists, epidemic of disappearances and the deaths of hundreds of thousands in a war between the state and powerful drug cartels.

Immigration experts will examine the implications for Canadian immigration policy, at a time when Donald Trump enacts the immigration measures he has long promised, while the Trudeau government has lifted the visa requirement for Mexican citizens introduced by its predecessor.

Amnesty’s Mexico campaigner Kathy Price will speak about our campaign to make Mexico’s human rights crisis visible in Canada and support the efforts of human rights organizations in Mexico. There will be opportunities to sign our actions and create a butterfly message in support of families of the disappeared.

When: Wednesday, March 8th from 5:00 - 8:30 pm, including closing reception

Where: Sandra Faire and Ivan Fecan Theater, Accolade East, York University – see map here
