Photo Exhibit, Music, and Speakers: An evening of celebration and action for the survival of indigenous peoples - September 13th
September 13th marks five years since the United Nations adopted the landmark Declaration for the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP), a hard won battle to achieve protection for vulnerable aboriginal communities around the world.
In far too many countries, including Canada, Indigenous people are still waiting for the rights enshrined in UNDRIP to be upheld. The situation in Colombia is nothing less than a human rights emergency, with more than a third of Indigenous Peoples in danger of disappearance as a result of violence and displacement linked to a vicious armed conflict and the imposition of resource extraction projects in their territory.
Join us on September 13th for the launch of a stunning collection of photos commissioned by AI Canada entitled: "THIS IS WHAT WE WANT TO TELL YOU! PHOTO MESSAGES FROM INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AT RISK OF DISAPPEARANCE IN COLOMBIA". The beautiful images feature women and men who were invited to write and hold up a message to Canadians about the realities they face.
Come be moved and inspired by this photo exhibit. Our event will also include a speaker from Colombia, music, refreshments and opportunities to take action for Indigenous rights in Colombia, Canada and other emblematic cases.
Join us! Raise your voice in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples courageously struggling for survival and dignity!
When: September 13th, 6 PM to 9 PM (drop in any time during these hours)
Where: AI Toronto Office, 1992 Yonge Street, 3rd Floor (two blocks north of the Davisville subway stop)
