We saw refugees in front of our door, we could not stand by and not help…

Katerina, Eleni, and Giorgos

Katerina, Eleni, Giorgos are members of a small NGO, Agkalia, which is based in the village of Kalloni, in the middle of the Greek island of Lesvos. They have helped refugees since 2007, have assisted 17,000 refugees during the so call ‘refugee crisis’ and also many local families affected by the economic crisis. Katerina says: ‘We saw refugees in front of our door, we could not stand by and not help…’

In 2016, the Agkalia was awarded the 2016 Raoul Wallenberg Prize by the Council of Europe for its outstanding work for refugees and the Alexander Langer International Award in 2017.

These three amazing and dedicated activists told Amnesty International: ‘If we did not have people around Europe supporting our activities we could not do anything…’.

Giorgos’ message to people who want to come to the islands and assist the refugees: ‘Whatever you offer, you get it back in strength in your personal life’.
