Amnesty International Neighbourhood Groups

Amnesty International groups are formed when a number of committed activists meet regularly to carry out AI's human rights campaigns. They work on behalf of the victims of human rights violations, to encourage others in the community to send appeals, raise awareness and fundraise. Typically groups meet once a month.

The format of meetings vary depending on the nature of the groups. Some meetings are very casual l, while other groups choose to observe formal rules of procedure. Some groups concentrate on specific AI concerns or on specific countries or regions of the world. Others decide to tackle a broad range of issues. Depending on their resources, groups may take up a range of campaigning activities: they create public awareness through community news media; lobby local politicians; reach out to involve professionals; send letters and other direct appeals; do human rights education work through public speaking/presentation in schools; and organize fundraising events.
